2024 UKC Conformation Top Ten—#7

Asta is one of the keeper pups from the 2024 Oslo x Drama litter. She was a fireball from the get-go. She ended up being ranked in UKC’s Top Ten the year she was born, only being eligible for the last ten weeks of the year. She also made her NALC conformation debut with a Reserve Best Female in Show the day before her six month birthday. She’s also a top “critter-gitter” in the yard with lots of go. I’m hoping that as she matures she finds her off switch. As of her first birthday she looks to be poised to tote her momma’s collar upon Drama’s full retirement.

Asta’s name has several inspirations: all of my dogs from Beau on have hiked or backpacked with me on the North Country National Scenic Trail. The logo for the trail is a compass rose invoking the North Star. The North Star is also the name of their magazine. Asta, being a common Scandinavian girls’ name meaning “star-like” fit well as a call name. She’d been called by her puppy litter name for two months when it was decided she’d be Asta (a name I’d had picked for well over a year) and within two hours she was responding to only her new name. It was truly meant to be. The most important influence of her name, however, comes from my brothers teaching me constellations when I was very young. The showed me how to use the “pointer stars” on Ursa Major (the Big Dipper) to find Polaris (the North Star) at the end of Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper). They told me that if I can see the North Star it will always help me find my way. After losing Ranger (Asta’s grandsire) and my mother only a few weeks apart I was lost. I was lost in the dark and fell many times, but Asta, my North Star, is helping me find my way again.
